March 25, 2002 Zelman, Smith Win Freedom Book of the Year for Hope
Hope, a unique political adventure novel written by Aaron Zelman and L. Neil Smith has won the 2001 Freedom Book of the Year Award.
Zelman is founder and executive director of Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, "America's most aggressive civil rights organization". Through many and varied publications, and frequent personal appearences, JPFO educates Americans on the deadly dangers of "gun control" -- more accurately termed "victim disarmament", a phenomenon Jews experienced the consequences of during the Holocaust -- and the importance of creating a "Bill of Rights culture".
Smith is known for Forge of the Elders, The Probability Broach, and Pallas, all of which won Prometheus Awards, presented by the Libertarian Futurist Society for the best libertarian novel of the year, for The Mitzvah, a previous effort with Zelman, and for Star Wars: The Lando Calrissian Adventures. His 2001 collection of essays Lever Action tied with Steven J. Milloy's Junk Science Judo for second place for Freedom Book of the Year. His novel The American Zone, also published in 2001, tied with Chris Matthew Sciabarra's Total Freedom for third place.
Free-Market.net is an entity created to promote individual liberty. Hope is the first work to be selected by an open reader poll established to identify the best freedom-oriented book of the year. Hope was previously Free-Market.net's Freedom Book of the Month for August, 2001.
The near-future story, set in 2008, concerns Alexander Hope, a billionaire industrialist who retires to teach at a private college, and through a fluke of history becomes the first libertarian President of the United States. Determined to force government to work within the legal bounds of the Constitution, he institutes a policy he calls "Bill of Rights enforcement"
During Hope's presidential race and after, he makes friends and enemies, some of the latter in his own Free Libertarian Party of America, and a few of whom try to assassinate him. A widower, he meets Dana Li, a beautiful young Internet reporter with whom he falls in love.
Aided by Faith-Anne, his lawyer daughter, and John Pondoro, a best friend with whom he survived Vietnam, Hope struggles to overcome bitter political opposition, betrayal, injury, death threats, and 200 years of relentless Washington growth, to create a government that people will no longer have any reason to fear.
The novel Hope points the way toward a better tomorrow for Americans, and a new era of peace, prosperity, and progress. It's a must-read for anyone interested in the future -- and concerned with the runaway growth of government power, especially in the shadow of recent events.
