This April 19 marks the eve of Passover, exactly as it did 65 years ago, in 1943, when a handful of Jews in the infamous Warsaw Ghetto rose up against a murderous regime, armed themselves, and kept an inordinate number of Nazi troops occupied for weeks despite the Germans' much greater numbers and more numerous and powerful weapons.
Passover has traditionally been a time of great rejoicing, as it commemorates the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and their liberation from slavery. And yet, we here at Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership wonder whether rejoicing is really appropriate today, given the government's "war on terror" -- which is actually a war against the American people, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
We are, in effect, allowing ourselves to slip back into bondage and slavery again.
There are a great many other things to contemplate, as well: the so-called "Patriot Act", the "Military Commissions Act", the illegal incarceration and torture of those the government disapproves of, surveillance cameras everywhere, and, at a time when so many other jurisdictions are making it easier for people to defend themselves, the insane drive of states like California and Illinois to outlaw private ownership of firearms when such laws have long since been proven to _enable_ crime -- including genocide -- rather than prevent it.
