Gun Laws and the Fools of Chelm
A broad reaching piece that covers much to do with gun laws, existing and proposed, and the general "one-size-fits-all" approach of legislation. This statement is an all too well known truism -- "Violence by firearms is most prevalent in big cities with the strictest gun laws. In Chicago and Washington, D.C., for example, it is only the criminals who have guns, the law-abiding populace having been disarmed, and so crime runs riot." All it forgets to emphasize is that in those places, the good guys are all but defenseless.
Other aspects cover what the Founders thought and why they wrote their limiting rules of governance. " ... that any person or group with the power to tax, to form laws, and to enforce them by arms will default to dictatorship, absent the constant unflagging scrutiny of the governed, and their severe untempered insistence upon compliance with law." Some segments of gun control are aimed at producing a local electoral majority, the prime example being the Colorado bills that would cause enough pro-gun people to move out of the state to ensure a long-term Democrat majority. Others are aimed at disarming the "most probably enemy" population groups, and both political parties are guilty of that to some extent, though the Democratic party does it far more."
