Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of today's
senseless Washington DC Navy Yard shooting tragedy.
There has been an apparent further increase in police excesses these days, with a seeming trend towards militarization and more and more 'no-knock warrant' occurrences. It is perhaps time to stop and consider some of the many innocent deaths caused by over-zealous and careless implementation, with the prosecution of the 'drug war' in particular.
"Probable Cause" and "Reasonable Suspicion" have been stretched too often way beyond the limit, as well as a rampant lack of respect for the fourth amendment. Couple that with law enforcement personnel disguised in their "ninja" outfits or even playing "plain clothes pretend", and the consequences leading to the death of innocents mounts up. Nothing new in fact, but the increasing trend is disturbing to say the least.
One other aspect that should generate concern as well, is the sometimes apparent lack of consequences to LE personnel who have perpetrated crimes against innocent people, no doubt assisted by the closed-ranks 'buddy' system leading to a mere slap on the wrist. Cynical thinking? Probably!
